mike storm comes from the underground scene of the 072 area in the netherlands. in the late 90s he started as a dj, soon he moved from turntables to his first equipment and started performing live-sets on various local partys. while the underground scene was highly involved electro and techno music, mike learned from it’s established djs & producers and how to work with analog equipment. as of this day, he still produces his tracks still without any computer sequencer. mike storm is most of all inspired by the sound from detroit and minimal dark techno and his biggest passion is performing live on stage. in 2012 mikes coming out of the underground scene and sees his music is being appreciated by the likes of jeff mills and dimi angelis. both djs frequently use his tracks in their sets.

emotional rescue is proud to reissue one of germanys best - if most underrated - collectives dunkelziffer. formed of dominik von senger, reiner linke and helmut zerlett, the floating line up also included contributions from cans damo suzuki and jaki liebetzeit, as well as the unknown cases stefan kratchen and reebop kwaku baah. this true supergroup, over a 6 year period, made 4 ground breaking albums that covered the classic krautrock blend of heavy, repetitive drumming, intricate, overlapping melody and sonic intonation, but expanded it to include heavy dub, soul and jazz elements. this special retrospection obi set is being issued as part of record store day and features the three 12 inches that will later be released individually.

kool vibes groovin ep oozes classic french house vibes form the get-go thanks to the opener no more wastin. stocato rhode stabs are met with quick-jangled percussion, cut vocals (like the french only know how) and thumping beats. underground settles down a little, maintaining a sultry groove with a chord driven hustle, while groovin is upbeat french house at its best. feel it features more juicy and looped up sample action with call and response vocals thrown in for added effect. a must have for the french house connoisseur.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. last year kyodai dropped breaking, which to date is the biggest selling release on local talk. now the brothers are back with in our opinion a future house anthem. the scene is a classic piano house cut that’s impossible to resist and together with one the coolest vocal samples we’ve ever heard we think this has the potential to go really big. when the breakdown drops we’re pretty sure everybody in the club will chant. but as if this was not enough we also got another big tune on the b-side. moving is the continuation of “breaking” and goes along the same lines with its crossover jazz styled house. once again kyodai delivers a supa solid house production with large jazz breakdowns and old school vocals that’s right up their with ”breaking”. this is also why we called it…breaking pt.2. kyodai is currently working on their debut album for local talk which is due later this year. they’re also travelling around the world with their amazing live dj set that we highly recommend. trust us when we say that these two brothers really now how to turn up the heat in a club…serious biz!

portuguese troia phonograph kicks off 2013 with a stunning release. pedro goyas music is well known for his past releases on such labels as classic music company, music for freaks, brique rouge, exun, om. the approach is slight different this time (if you are familiar with pedros music). refined, full and risky, that is how we would name it. both tracks are long stories that keep you interested all the way. impressive sound signature, bouncy basslines, tight rhythm section and soul all around turn this record into something that cannot be done by accident or randomly. this is how a deep house record should sound.

knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.

there are two tracks on nottingham producer spares >slacking ep< that immerse you really well in his taught world of bass pressure. kankle is firing tribal house, though its hard to get the measure of how the thud of the kick drum could ever fit under the bass work, and the weekend is a clipped garage pound with serenely oppressive low end

it has been a memorable year for the luv shack. release after release, props after props, watching the guys build on a solid foundations and take it up a notch each time. if you listen to their first release (again), and then this new release, you will see just how far they have travelled in such a small time frame. and yes, it started with a couple of mini compilations and eps to see what the reaction would be. the reaction was good, actually no, the reaction was great, the right jocks took to the guys and the early eps and hence since, the luv shack posse have been locked up in a studio ever since. they have been productive, and more to the point, excelling in that production. it is going to be a brilliant 2013.
